The Craig Middle School volleyball teams split a pair of tightly contested matches Thursday at CMS.
The eighth grade A and B volleyball teams played matches against Meeker Thursday afternoon, and while the A team lost in two close sets, the B team dug deep to win in three.
In the first match of the afternoon, the B team split the first two sets with Meeker, 25-18 and 18-25. In the third set, the Bulldogs took an early lead with good serving from Shaeli Hatten and they never looked back.
The result was a 15-9 result in the decisive third set.
Coach Sarah Wiseman was happy with the way her group played as a unit.
"They played very well," Wiseman said. "They had some aggression to them, which is needed. They were moving their feet, they were talking with one another. They played a a team and that's the number one thing, that they worked together and played as a mini-family."
In the second match, the A group of eighth-graders squared off and a back-and-forth first set went to Meeker, 25-23. In the second set, the Cowboys would again prevail, 25-18.
The difference came when Meeker player Lori Ann Klinglesmith stepped to the service line and got the Cowboys on a run. They scored seven consecutive points to take a 12-6, and CMS was never able to fully recover.
Each set in both matches were in doubt the entire way, a product of Craig and Meeker being evenly matched sides, Wiseman said.
"(Meeker is) on the same level as us, so it's nice to be able to have that challenge and make the games close," she said. "That makes it all the better for whichever team wins. You know that you gave your best."
The middle school volleyball season is winding down, with the district tournament in Steamboat coming up Oct. 13. But the Bulldogs still have three matches remaining on the season, including a home game vs. Steamboat Oct. 6.
"They've worked hard all year, and we're getting close to the end," Wiseman said. "They've just worked hard and I'm really proud of them."
