Now that the players and coaches of the eighth- and seventh-grade volleyball teams have seen what they'll be facing in the district tournament, they can adjust accordingly.
CMS volleyball finished its regular season Oct. 8 in Steamboat with mostly positive results. While the eighth-grade A-team lost 2-0, the B-team won by the same numbers, and both seventh-grade A- and B-teams each came out ahead, 2-1.
Eighth-grade coach Michelle Henderson said her A-team struggled against a formidable Sailor squad.
"Steamboat had some really hard hitters, and we had some good service and great hustle, but it just didn't happen for us," she said.
The A-team's record stands at 5-4, while the B-team is 6-0.
Henderson said the game gave her the insight to gauge what she needed to work on for district tournament on Saturday.
Steamboat, Meeker and Rangely will travel to CMS for the tournament, which CMS's eighth-graders won last year.
"We're going to have to focus on digging in practices this week," she said. "Districts is going to be tough, and it doesn't matter who we face as long as we play some tough volleyball."
While in Steamboat, seventh-grade coach Cristy Simpson took the opportunity to try some new strategies for the tournament.
"I moved some of my B-team girls to A-team and some of my C-team to B, and it worked pretty well," she said. "We need to get them all ready to play together the way we want, but I think they'll do just fine."
The A-team maintains a 6-3 record, while the B-team is 2-5.
"I think Meeker will be the toughest competition, they really put up a fight last time," Simpson said. "I think the main thing we need to do is build up their confidence."
