CMS students participate in poetry reading

— Casandra Cruz stood with her family at Downtown Books on Thursday evening preparing to read a poem she wrote about casinos to the packed room.

Cruz was one of ten Craig Middle School eighth-graders who were chosen to share their poems at the annual poetry reading.

The students were winners of the Carol Jacobson Memorial Poetry Contest, which required a theme of the celebration of life.

The competition was held in memory of Mayor Terry Carwile’s wife, whom he described as a lover of the arts. He said she supported the arts for young children and especially young women.

“Poetry allows them to break out of the traditional essay and think outside the box,” middle school teacher Trisha McGee said.

McGee and teacher Janie Wilson had their classes participate in the contest, which was judged by Derek Maiolo, Shirly Simpson, Dave Morris and Janet Sheridan.

Students read poems on life, including sheep, the beauty of water and relationships.

Pearl Wymann’s poem was voted the best. Cruz placed second, John T. Peroulis was third, Jamie Ferre was fourth, Elizabeth Weis was fifth, and Rae Kohpay was sixth. Honorable mentions included Matt Moscheti, Kaylee Durnham, Morgan Flanders and Dommeniqc Bell.
