Clothes for a cause
July 28, 2006
Normally Kristen Nichols would take her extra clothing to a local thrift store. But when she read about the “Closet Cleaning” at Maurices, she made an exception.
“I have tons of old clothing and when I read about (the closet cleaning) in the newspaper I came here,” she said. “I shop here often anyway, so why not help others and myself out?”
Friday and today, the local Maurices, located in Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way, is offering a 20 percent-off coupon for every four articles of clean, previously owned clothing brought into the store. The clothing collected will go to the Advocates — Crisis Support Services.
“We used to give our rummages to the crisis center but now we have to send those back to corporate,” associate manager Shannon White said. “We wanted to be able to give to them again so (manager) Nancy (Bohrer) came up with this idea.”
Rummages are clothes with small defects like missing a button or having a slight stain.
White said people started to bring clothing into the store on Thursday. On Friday, they had collected several bags of clothes.
“(Saturday) will probably be our biggest day,” she said. “People have even brought clothing by and not asked for a coupon.”
People can bring in enough clothing to receive 10 coupons. The coupons can only be used for one piece of regularly priced clothing, and only three can be used during one purchase.
Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.
