Christmas concert organizers calling for Craig singers, musicians

Holiday performance will include community choir, smaller acts

Craig's Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will host a Community Interfaith Christmas Concert Dec. 13 and is currently looking for local singers to join in the music. People from any church can either participate with the larger choir or perform their own solo or ensemble, whether vocal or instrumental.

The holiday season starts earlier and earlier, but in this case, there's a good reason.

— Organizers are seeking members of all denominations for the performance, which will take place Dec. 13. The choir is for 12 and older. The Community Interfaith Christmas Concert is scheduled for Dec. 13, and organizers are seeking sizable involvement from all denominations to prepare a show unlike any other.

The performance will feature the Interfaith Community Choir singing selection from Handel's "Messiah" including "For Unto Us a Child Is Born" and "Hallelujah" chorus, as well as the more contemporary "Angels' Carol." Since these are complex pieces, rehearsal sessions months in advance are necessary, said concert committee member Aaron Gillett.

She's hoping to bolster numbers with plenty of women and men from throughout the area.

"We're trying to get all the churches in the community to join in the celebration," she said. "We have a little more women, so we could use some more bass, but we need all the voice groups."

There are no auditions for the choir, but those who participate should take the commitment seriously and regularly attend Sunday evening practices at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Singers should also be over the age of 12.

The other part of the show consists of solos or smaller group acts. Any size or age is welcome for this portion and preparation is based on their own schedules, but those who put their name on the setlist should prepare Christian-themed music and not secular Christmas tunes.

"We're not looking for 'Here Comes Santa Claus,'" Gillett said, noting that slots are filling quickly.

Last year was a "wonderful turnout," Gillett said, and the hope is to keep the quality up each year.

Fellow committee member Sally Smith said the holiday is one in which all local churches can share in their faith.

"It's very important we get the whole community involved," she said.
