Children enroll in college classes
Youth go in search of bugs during CNCC's 'College for Kids'
July 23, 2001
Lost as to where to send your young children for the day? Can’t find a summer program that both educates and allows a parent some well deserved rest?
Fret no more, the answer is simple: Send them to college.
Colorado Northwestern Community College offers classes for youth between the ages of 3 and 14. The programs are Camp College, which is for children ages 7- to 14-years-old, and In Search of Bugs, which is for children ages 4- to 8-years-old. The programs were on Monday and today, and will be held again on Thursday. Camp College is an all-day program, which is held at the Museum of Northwest Colorado in the mornings and The Center of Craig in the afternoons. In Search of Bugs is an afternoon program, which is held at the CNCC Belltower building.
“This is the first time we have offered College for Kids in the camp format,” said Mary Morris, coordinator of Community Education and Public Information. “This allows us to offer large blocks of time for the learning of old-time crafts.”
Camp College will have both morning and afternoon sessions. The morning camp classes are from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the afternoon classes are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch served in between. Children attend either an all-day program, or just a morning or afternoon class.
In Search of Bugs is in the afternoons from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Children can be signed up for one to three days of the programs. Both programs involve the participating children in projects, discussions and activities that are based on the day’s curriculum.
“The college wants to stimulate an interest in learning at an early age, have kids take an interest in specific areas of study, especially science, the arts and music,” Morris said. “We want to do our part to encourage the desire to learn.”
Parents can still drop by the class sites and register for Thursday’s activities.
The fee for Camp College is $75 for the complete three day program for both morning and afternoon; each separate complete day is $25. The fee for a half-day of activities is $12.50, while the fee for a three-day morning or afternoon only program is $37.50. All project materials are included in the fee.
The fee for In Search of Bugs is $25 for the three-day program. A bug net and bug observatory are included in the fee.
