Child struck by car near school
Boy suffers only scratches from accident

A 7-year-old boy was struck by a car and dragged 10 feet after darting out into School Street around 2:45 Thursday afternoon.
Police and emergency crews responded to Sunset Elementary School, where the child was immobilized as a precaution. He was transported to The Memorial Hospital for examination and treatment.
“This was one very lucky little boy,” said Sgt. Corey Wagner of the Craig Police Department. “The only injuries he suffered were scratches on his leg and chin.”
From witness statements and a scene investigation conducted by Sgt. Wagner and Officers Brian Gonzalez and Jeff Carlson, it was determined the boy ran into the street and the driver, Joni Zaragoza, was unable to maneuver around him.
“The driver was not at fault as far as our investigation has shown,” Wagner said. “She tried to avoid him, but wasn’t able to.”
There are two more witnesses that needed to be interviewed before a final report was filed, Wagner said.
The boy was released from The Memorial Hospital early Thursday evening.
