Hard work secret to Madsen Fabrication’s success

When John and Jenny Madsen decided to open Madsen Fabrication, Inc., a Moffat County machine shop, they had their share of start-up challenges.

From being denied a business loan to working to secure the necessary equipment and appropriate electric capacity at a commercial property, the Madsens persevered to make their vision a reality.

On May 2, 2016, they opened their doors at 90 East First Street, Unit 1, and have experienced success in the business’ first year.

The Madsens shared their story Wednesday with the Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership board of directors and guests.

John Madsen attributes much of the knowledge he brought to the new venture to Stan Hathhorn, who owned Magnum Metals, which John Madsen managed for 20 years before it closed last year.

“He’s the smartest business man I’ve ever met,” John Madsen said of Hathorn.

Jenny Madsen also worked at Magnum Metals, and both were out of a job when the shop closed. Local vendors and customers made the new business possible, the couple said, and they make it a point to give back to the community that’s supported them.

“We supply our shop as much as we can in Craig,” Jenny Madsen said.

Her husband agreed. “That’s the biggest thing I say: We’ve got to support our local business, and in turn, your local business has to support you.”

While the Madsens have expanded into a second bay at their location, there remains room for growth in the company. Madsen Fabrication is operating in 5,000 square feet, while Magnum Metals was at 18,500 square feet. John Madsen said he wants to have smart, steady growth that accounts for workforce challenges, including hiring well-rounded employees who are willing to work hard and learn the trade.

He added that hard work is what has helped he and his family make Madsen Fabrication a reality.

“Anything somebody wants — if you work for it, you’ll get it,” he said. “That’s what we did.”
