Shoppers enjoyed samples and selections offered by eight new and six returning sellers at the first Friday farmers market in Craig.

Over the next few weeks the Craig Daily Press will visit with each market sellers, starting with four of the new sellers.

• Handmade Wood Art by Gary Juergens

About seven years ago, Juergens started making decorative and functional wood art from his workshop north or Craig.

He plans to sell every Friday or until he runs out of product.

“I don’t want to make it into a business, but I have built-up stock and want to get rid of it,” Juergens said.

Buyers purchased some of the smaller items and attracted interest from at least one area museum.

“A lady from the Little Snake Museum asked me to talk with her about selling my stuff there,” Juergens said.

• Gardeners’ ‘Side-kick’

Plants and flowers potted in antique containers were on offer by Jalynn Hoffman, owner of Side-Kick Greenhouse.

The greenhouse is located near Steamboat Springs were plants and flowers are grown from plugs.

“The plants do very well in our area after they are hardened-off,” Hoffman said.

She expects to be at the Craig farmers market for the next two or three weeks.

“We are wrapping up our season,” Hoffman said.

• Log Cabin Foods

Food demonstrator Janet Kime will be at Craig’s farmers market about twice a month to sell products made by her sister’s business — Log Cabin Foods, LLC.

Susan and Mike Prescott’s family run specialty food business is based on the Western Slope.

“They live in Palisade, I live in Rifle and have family in Craig. It’s a great opportunity to come to town to sell and see family,” Kime said.

Shoppers dropping by the market stall learned how to add spice packets into cream cheese, sour cream or diced tomatoes to create soups, salsa, desserts and dips.

Next week is Kime’s week off, but she will return on June 23.

“I will be here just before father’s day and have father’s day sample gift baskets,” Kime said.

• Western Slope produce and home goods

Organic fruits and veggies sit alongside soy candles, lotions, soaps and handmade crafts at the Bearden family market stall.

By 4 p.m. the cherries had sold out. It’s still early in the Western Colorado growing season.

“Our veggies are coming up, but won’t ready until August,” said Rose Bearden.

Shoppers can look forward to beans from the family farm in Burns, produce from Palisade and Olathe Sweet Corn.

Packing Up: Shipping & hobby business for sale

PackCenter Shipping and Empire Express Hobby and Toys located at 509 Yampa Ave. are for sale.

Business owner T.J. Montgomery shares the space with his wife, Farmer’s Insurance Agent Debbie Montgomery. Debbie’s business is outgrowing the space.

“Debbie is expanding. I’m losing my partner. Eighty percent of the time I handle it on my own, but then get bailed out 20 percent of the time and Deb takes care of the books,” T.J. said.

Instead of hiring staff, TJ thinks it’s a good time to try something new and has several irons in the fire.

“This time of year, I really want to be outside. Now in the winter when the wind is blowing the snow sideways, I’m happy to be inside,” he said.

He prefers to sell the two businesses together and is asking $50,000 for both. The selling price does not include the building.

“We lease from the Stoddards, but someone new should be able to come right in and keep the businesses here,” T.J. said.

The couple and their children will stay in Craig. T.J. says that he’ll miss the clientele, many have become friends over the nearly three years the Montgomeryes have owned the businesses.
