Business Beat: Mall apparel store offering teacher discounts
September 18, 2011
The new school year means an updated wardrobe for kids. But, students aren't the only ones who might need some new styles for fall, which is why one Centennial Mall store is giving educators a discount on fashions.
Women's clothing shop Maurices, 1111 W. Victory Way, Ste. 133, is hosting a Teacher Outreach sale through the end of the month. The program offers local educators discounts on the store's selection of blouses, skirts, pants, shoes, accessories and more.
"It's something we do to give back to the community," assistant manager April Rogers said. "When we've done it before, we've had a good response. We send out coupons for them, or they can just show us a school ID or something like that."
The 15-percent discount applies to any items in the store not already marked down for clearance.
Rogers, a senior at Moffat County High School, said she frequently sees her female instructors wearing Maurices fashions hand-picked by store associates.
"The most popular thing I've seen them buy are the dress pants, in fact, one of my teachers was just in here buying some," she said.

Rogers said the store will also feature a new incentive at the beginning of October.
"Our biggest thing of the year is Rescues and Runaways," she said. "It's a month-long event where people can donate cash for the local Humane Society and get a 20-percent discount on the most expensive thing they're buying that day. It helps animals find homes, plus we'll also have a fashion show where we'll be raising even more money for them.
"That's why I love working here, because of giving back to the community."

Furniture store liquidating seasonal inventory
If you're in need of new household furnishings in addition to new clothes, one of Maurices' neighbors will be having its own sale across the mall corridor.
To make room for incoming fall seasonal items, Furniture Connection, Ste. 106, has marked down prices across its sales floor from sofas to recliners to entertainment centers and more.
Co-owner Kymber Merrick said "pretty much everything" is part of the sale. One of the big focuses of the sale is on mattress inventory.
"Part of it is a truckload sale on all the major mattress companies," she said. "It's on overstock and ones that are slightly imperfect, like they have crooked seams or something like that. We did a whole semi-load of those, and we've got some left that are 50- to 75-percent off."
Merrick said she will soon be receiving new items from brands like Ashley Furniture and Lane Furniture.
Aside from furniture, the store also deals with JC Penney, a feature they began offering about two years ago.
"They've got an online presence now, and a lot of people, like the elderly, aren't really comfortable with that, so we like to help them out placing orders," she said.
