In the summer, you might need your four-wheeler repaired. In the winter, it might be your snowmobile.

But, no matter the time of year, a machinery-minded businessman who's new to Craig can lend a wrench.

The Shop On 4th and Steele St., 405 Steele St., offers engine work on a wide variety of machines and vehicles — ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, lawnmowers, weed whackers, generators and more.

Grand Junction mechanic Carl Manchester performs machine work out of the location, which formerly hosted the Grounds Repair Shop.

Manchester recently moved to Craig with his girlfriend, Haley Brumback, who serves as The Shop's office manager.

Brumback, a Craig native, moved back to the area to be close to her family.

"We got here about two weeks ago, and we're just getting set up and getting the ball rolling," she said. "I'm an independent insurance agent, so I sell that out of the office, too."

Brumback said Manchester's expertise of more than 20 years ranges from small engines to cars and trucks, for which he is also certified.

"He used to work for ATV Motorcycle Plus in Grand Junction, and he still has people tracking him down to do work," she said.

Manchester charges about $65 per hour.

"We've got very flexible hours," Brumback said. "Carl's working another job to supplement his income, so most of the work he does is by appointment."

Office hours for The Shop On 4th and Steele St. are Monday through Friday for customers to "stop in and drop off" their materials. To make an appointment for repairs, call 826-2623.

Flooring business offers new features, fall sale

In most contexts, TLC stands for "tender loving care." In Northwest Colorado, it means "tile, linoleum and carpet," but the more familiar idiom still applies to the business of the same name.

As part of its drive for customer service, TLC Carpet One, 1820 W. Victory Way, has started Healthier Living Installation.

Kevin Oxley, a manager and vice president for the business, said the promotion was meant to "clear the air" both literally and figuratively.

"There's been a lot of complaints from people about carpet because it raises a lot of allergy warnings and it absorbs a lot of dust and everything else," he said. "Healthy Living is meant to counteract that. It's a whole system with a special way of tearing stuff out and plasticking things off.

"It's stuff that we've kind of done already, but the biggest thing is there's an anti-microbial spray that you put down before you do anything."

Oxley said the process also included using a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) vacuum in the installation area instead of just sweeping.

"It gives it a fresh start, and then you come back with an anti-microbial pad, which we sold as an upgrade before, but now on our warranty level gold products and above it'll be standard," he said. "We've been doing it for about two months, and everyone who's been offered it has wanted it."

Another deal TLC offers is the Beautiful Guarantee, a promise of customer satisfaction on any recent installations.

"If you're not happy with it, the guarantee pays for all the materials and labor, no questions asked, depending on the warranty level," Oxley said.

Oxley said another upcoming promotion is the Lees Spillabration, a 50-percent discount on all Lees carpets, which starts in mid-September.

"It's really an incredible deal because their stuff is so high-quality," he said.

TLC hosted its yearly warehouse sale in June, as well as a customer appreciation day which brought in about 200 people. Oxley's father, Jay, started the business in 1976 in Meeker as Rocky Mountain TLC before he moved it to Craig in 1984.

TLC took on the Carpet One title in 2004.

"We have stores all over the country that we've got for suppliers, but shopping locally and providing good customer service for people here in town is still really important to us," Kevin Oxley said.
