Bullpups trounce Sailors

Tom Schafer

The eighth grade boys basketball A team sailed to an easy victory on Friday, trouncing Steamboat 31-24.

“The team worked hard in practice all week,” Head Coach Mike LeWarne said. “We worked on defense position in relation to where the ball was.”

The Bullpups came out aggressive early in the game and took a 5-0 lead with Jared Lowther’s three-point jumper. Steamboat answered with a three point of their own pulling within 2 points of the pups.

The Bullpups took a 10-3 lead on a free throw by Kyle Morris with 5:25 left in the first half. The Sailors ended the half with a five point run and came within two-points of Moffat County.

The Bullpups defense and offense looked strong throughout the game the antithesis of last weeks game when their defense and offense broke down in a loss to Meeker.

The Bullpups outscored the Sailors 12-8 in the third quarter. The pups defensive press forced several turnovers which resulted in scoring opportunities. Moffat County went into the fourth quarter leading 22-16.

The Bullpups took the lead early in the game and controlled the ball for four quarters.

With a nine point lead in the fourth quarter, the team hit two free throws with under a minute remaining. The pups 7 for 10 free throw shooting, in the fourth quarter, sunk any chance of the Sailors winning.

“The team played hard,” LeWarne said. “They played a scrappy second half and won the game.”
