As Halen Raymond goes, so goes the Moffat County High School boys varsity baseball team, it seems.

In the first game of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday against Battle Mountain High School, Raymond, an MCHS senior, hit a walk-off RBI single to cap a seventh inning come-from-behind 8-7 victory.

In the nightcap, Raymond started the game on the mound, and blasted a pair of home runs as the Bulldogs romped, 17-3.

“It was fun — it was stressful,” he said. “We know were a lot better than how we played.”

Moffat County (8-5 overall, 6-4 in the Western Slope League) led comfortably for most of the first game until a nightmarish sixth inning.

Behind three errors, the Huskies (3-15 overall, 2-12 in the WSL) were able to score six runs in the top half of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.

Battle Mountain shut down the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning, and Bulldogs pitcher Bubba Ivers was able to close out the seventh to keep MCHS within one in the bottom of the seventh.

Greg Blackstun started the inning with a walk, Dylon Camilletti flied out to center and Nathan Hill singled.

Austin Sadvar singled home Blackstun to tie the game at 7-7, before Raymond hit a single to bring home Hill and win the game.

“I was struggling at the plate,” Raymond said. “(Manager Justin) Folley told me to relax and block it all out and just hit the ball.

“I just cleared my head, hit the ball and we won.”

In the first game, Camilletti went 2 for 5 with a run scored, Sadvar went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and the game-tying RBI, Blackstun went 1 for 3 with 3 RBI and Ivers went 2 for 3.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs went out swinging, and never really stopped on their way to a season-high 17 runs.

If the team was disappointed in letting Battle Mountain hang close in the first game, it showed in the second.

“We just knew — we didn’t say anything,” Raymond said. “It was what we’re supposed to do all year long.”

The team scored four runs in each of the first two innings and another seven in the sixth.

Raymond finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and four runs scored, including solo home runs in the first and fifth innings.

Sadvar went 1 for 3 with two RBI and Mark Doolin pitched two innings and struck out six batters.

The team will plat at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday in Glenwood Springs against the Demons (7-10 overall, 4-8 in the WSL).
