Bulldogs open season on road
November 28, 2000
Bulldog wrestling mania begins with three days of solid matches and will start the team on its quest for a state championship.
The ‘Dogs will open their season against matmen from Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah a team Moffat County beat last year.
“We were both young teams last season, but we dominated them in that duel match” Head Coach Roman Gutierrez said. “Union does wrestle with intensity and it should be a good match.”
The Bulldog strengths lay in the 103-145 weight divisions.
Gutierrez said, “We have depth in these classes and should win many matches in these divisions.”
The Bulldogs will have their season home opener Friday against Elizabeth a Denver area team.
“Again, this team was a young team last season and we beat them.” Gutierrez said. “It should be a good match for both of us.”
The Bulldogs have been practicing well this season and picking things up quickly, Gutierrez said.
“The Bulldogs haven’t made any changes from last season,” he added. “We are going to keep working on the things that have been working for us.”
The team travels to Granby Saturday for a 16-team tournament.
“The competition will be tough for the wrestlers. There is a guy from Granby that is a two-time state champion and a three-time finalist. Another player, from Olathe, is also a two-time state champion in 3A. South Pueblo is a top ten contender,” Gutierrez said. “The kids should get at least two to five matches in the tournament.”
According to Gutierrez, Wrestlers are excited about the season starting. They are tied of beating each other up and want to prove themselves on the mats, he said.
“I want to see what the kids can do,” he added. “Craig is going to a be a threat this year.”
The Bulldogs will have their season opener against Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Moffat County High School.
