Briefs for Sept. 2, 2011: Lightning causes four fires reported Thursday

More than 6,000 lightning strikes were recorded across Northwest Colorado on Wednesday, according to a release from the Northwest Colorado Fire Management Unit.

Four of the five wildland fires reported Thursday were caused by lightning. Three of the incidents are in western Moffat County and two are in Rio Blanco County.

Engine crews from Dinosaur National Monument, Browns Park Wildlife Refuge and Bureau of Land Management are responding to the fires.

VNA offers free cardio screenings

In honor of National Cholesterol Education Month, the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering free cardiovascular screenings every Tuesday in September at the Community Health Center.

Screenings include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood glucose and body mass index.

Library closed for Labor Day

All branches of Moffat County Libraries will be closed Saturday through Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Horizons offers free developmental screenings

Horizons Specialized Services, 439 Breeze St., is offering free developmental screenings for children from birth to age 3.

The screenings will address questions about when children should be walking and speaking as well as concerns about hearing and vision.
