Briefs for May 18, 2011: Events planned to honor late teacher

Events to memorialize Craig Smith are planned for Thursday and Friday.
Smith, who taught band at Craig Middle School for nine years, died Sunday of a brain aneurysm at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 64.
The Craig Middle School band concert — led by Moffat County High School band director John Bolton in Smith's place — is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the MCHS auditorium, 900 Finley Lane.
A balloon release will follow the concert on the high school football field.
A memorial service for Smith is planned for 4:30 p.m. Friday at the high school auditorium.
The public is invited to attend all of the memorial events.
Fire District to host public hearing
The Craig Rural Fire Protection District will host a public hearing for petitioning at 7 p.m. Thursday at the fire station, 419 Yampa Ave.
Robert and Karen Snavely, 45570 N. Colo. Hwy. 13, and Tyler and Megan McWilliams, 316 Sunset Drive, are requesting to join the fire protection district.

Driver safety program slated
The AARP driver safety program is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the second-floor activity room at Sunset Meadows I, 633 Ledford St.
The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

Moving Wall of Brands on display
The Moving Wall of Brands, sponsored by the Moffat County Cattlewomen, is on display through the month of May at the Bargain Barn, 506 Yampa Ave.
The next meeting of the Moffat County Cattlewomen is at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Moffat County School District bus garage on Rose Street. Any women interested in promoting agriculture are invited to attend.
