Briefs for June 1, 2011: Annual fishing event set for Saturday

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4265 and Auxiliary, American Legion Post 62, local law enforcement agencies and the Colorado Division of Wildlife are partnering to offer the 58th annual Huck Finn Kids, Cops and Vets fishing day on Saturday.

The event is open to youths from 2 to 12 and takes place at the Little Rascal Pond at the Moffat County Public Safety Center, 800 W. First St.

Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m.

There will be homemade fishing pole and costume contests from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m., followed by a 10-minute presentation on fishing safety and rules.

Prize fishing will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Gift certificates will be awarded to winners.

The costume contest will be for the most authentic Becky Thatcher and Huck Finn costumes, as well as best law enforcement officer costume.

A concession stand will be available with free hamburgers, hot dogs and chips.

A fishing license is not required; the event date corresponds with Colorado Free Fishing Day.

There is a limit of four fish per person, and participants may use any kind of pole.

Workforce Center offers workshop

The Colorado Workforce Center is offering "Workplace Harassment and Law: Bullying in the Workplace" from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Colorado Northwestern Community College, room 201, 50 College Drive.

The workshop is free and is appropriate for employers and employees.

Legion bingo boasts $1,800 jackpot

American Legion Post 62 will host bingo Saturday with a progressive jackpot now valued at $1,800.

The event has a revised starting time of 5:45 p.m. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 43 W. Victory Way.
