Briefs for July 19, 2011: USDA to distribute food today, later this month

The United States Department of Agriculture has scheduled food supplement distributions this month.

Food will be distributed from 9 to 11 a.m. today at 595 Breeze St. at the northeast alley entrance, 9 to 9:30 a.m. July 27 at the Maybell Community Center and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 27 at the Moffat County office in Dinosaur.

Humane Society garage sale set for this weekend

The annual Humane Society of Moffat County garage sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the barn at 2205 E. Ninth St.

All proceeds benefit the Humane Society.

VNA to host Child Health Fair

Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association's Community Health Center is hosting a Child Health Fair on from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the center, 745 Russell St.

Appointments for well child exams and sports physicals are available throughout the day. The cost is $25 for each, and insurance and Medicaid are accepted.

The fair is open to the public and will also include free dental screenings and education, car seat safety checks, fire safety information, immunizations (take children's immunization cards) and healthy eating information.

Free Social Security assistance will be offered later this month.

Benefits planner David Nelson will present Social Security Benefits Basics from 1:15 to 3 p.m. July 26 and host private appointments throughout the day at the Independent Life Center, 483 Yampa Ave.

Family reunion set for Saturday

A reunion for the Miller, Pankey and Meineke families is scheduled for this weekend.

Family members will gather from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Moffat County Fairgrounds Pavilion. A catered lunch will be provided at noon.

Annual Ducky Race set for Sept. 10

The Craig Lions Club's fourth annual Ducky Race has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 10 on the Yampa River.

The race is a fundraiser for the Lions Club's eyeglasses program.

Up to 500 ducks, representing four branches of the armed forces, are now being sold for $10 each. On race day, the ducks will be set on the river from the bridge on Ranney St. Three prizes are offered — $750, $500 and $250 — for the first three ducks to cross the finish at the canoe launch in Loudy-Simpson Park.

Ducks can be purchased from any Lions Club member or by calling (970) 640-5194.
