Steamboat Springs — The Hayden School District is scheduled to unveil the first step in a process to trim more than $300,000 from the 2010-11 budget when the School Board meets tonight.
Hayden High School Principal Troy Zabel will lead a discussion with School Board members about a survey created by the district's budget committee.
Last month, board members unanimously approved a budget reduction process. They formed a budget committee, which comprises 13 district representatives elected by colleagues, including teachers from each school and members of various departments. Finance Director Jnl Linsacum also serves on the committee.
Its first job is to present the survey to the School Board. The document then will be distributed to staff, parents, community members, businesses and groups to get feedback.
The committee also will compile the survey results to present recommendations to the district administration to make budget decisions. The board is scheduled to approve preliminary budget measures for 2010-11 in March.
Also at tonight's meeting, board members are scheduled to consider whether to approve the 2009-10 budget, which is due to the state by Jan. 31.
Linsacum said the only changes to the more than $5 million budget are final numbers. She said completion of the district's 2008-09 audit revealed a general fund balance of nearly $244,000. And the budget includes the district's updated student count, which determines how much funding Hayden receives from the state.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the School Board meeting room at the district offices. An opportunity for public comment will precede the reports, discussions, action agenda items and an executive session relating to personnel.
