Barron: New tobacco restrictions

To the editor:
The one-year anniversary of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act is approaching; and on that date, June 22, the following restrictions will take place:
• Retailers will be required to verify a purchaser's age by photographic identification.
• Free samples of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco will be prohibited, except in adult-only facilities.
• The sale of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products through vending machines and self-service displays will be prohibited, except in facilities where individuals under the age of 18 are not present at any time.
• The advertising and labeling to which children and adolescents will be exposed are limited to a black-and-white, text-only format (currently litigation regarding this provision is moving through the judicial system).

• The sale or distribution of brand-identified promotional items, such as hats and T-shirts will be prohibited.
• Sponsorship of sporting and other events, teams and entries in a brand name of a tobacco product will be prohibited.
All of these restrictions will decrease the amount of tobacco advertising and tobacco products that we are exposed to every day.
Show your support to this bill by disposing of any tobacco branded gear that you own.
These restrictions are geared to significantly limit the am-
-ount of tobacco messaging that we have been inundated with in the past.
Hopefully by eliminating this messaging at sporting events and making packaging less visually appealing, more current tobacco users will choose to quit and more of our children will never start.
