Assistant principal faces child sex charges

Associated Press

(AP) — An assistant principal at a suburban Denver high school has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old female student.

Forty-year-old Anthony Alvarez appeared in court on Friday on charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Jefferson County Public Schools says Alvarez is on paid administrative leave from his job at Arvada High School.

Court records say Alvarez has known the girl since she was a seventh-grader at a school where Alvarez taught.

An arrest warrant affidavit says Alvarez surrendered to police Thursday at the urging of his wife after she overheard a phone conversation between Alvarez and the student. The affidavit describes the conversation as “sexually explicit.”

It wasn’t clear whether Alvarez has an attorney.
