Agency receives grant to help residents with bills
June 10, 2010
The Independent Life Center in Craig Monday received a $20,000 grant from Energy Outreach Colorado foundation to help Northwest Colorado residents pay gas and electric bills, executive director Evelyn Tileston said.
Residents of Moffat, Rio Blanco, Routt, Grand and Summit counties can apply for ILC assistance funds if they are late on bill payments or have had their primary heating or electricity shut off.
Applicants will need to provide previous bills or shut-off notice, social security card and a driver's license or other photo identification.
The assistance funding is not limited to residents with disabilities, Tileston said.
Funding is available for residents who have not received assistance from Energy Outreach Colorado since Nov. 1, 2009.
The ILC applies for the grant every year, which Tileston said is "a tremendous help to the people we serve."

"We were totally out of money for this program," Tileston said. "We had people coming to us who were really in desperate situations … and we had no way to help them."
Tileston said ILC was actively looking for applicants because the grant money has to be spent by the end of September.
Applications are available at the ILC office at 483 Yampa Ave. For more information, call 826-0833.
ILC parking lot to undergo renovations
The ILC is also starting an overhaul of the parking lot it uses at the intersection of Yampa Avenue and West Victory Way.
The parking lot project is part of a grant the ILC received in February for several building renovation projects to make the location meet American Disabilities Act standards, and more handicap accessible.
Tileston said the old parking lot was "extremely dangerous."
"People in wheelchairs could not navigate it, it had ice pits … people were slipping because of the unevenness and the ice," she said. "The USDA people who saw it said, 'This is not acceptable, you have to make this parking lot and the building ADA accessible.'"
A paved ramp to the back door of Tranzformations Salon will also be constructed.
