Advocates-Crisis Support Services in Craig looking for volunteers
March 1, 2012
Advocates-Crisis Support Services, a nonprofit service agency in Craig, is searching for volunteers to work with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Desirae Pearcey, the organization's outgoing shelter manager volunteer coordinator, said the agency is hosting domestic violence and sexual assault response training in early March "for individuals interested in helping others in the community."
Advocates currently has four volunteers who respond when paged to the Moffat County Public Safety Center, The Memorial Hospital in Craig, or the homes of victims.
Volunteers advocate for victim rights by assisting them through the court process or by lining up support services, Pearcey said.
Volunteers interested in working with domestic violence victims will go through 20 hours of training, plus an additional 10 hours of "shadow" time with a qualified advocate.
"We wouldn't throw anyone out there without some shadow experience," Pearcey said. "We have a really great team of volunteers and I think people find the shadow time helpful."
Those interested in advocating on behalf of sexual assault victims are required to take an additional eight hours of instruction.
The agency is flexible on when volunteers can work, Pearcey said. Trained volunteers meet each month to discuss a variety of topics and pick their calendar days.
"This volunteer time is really whenever somebody is available, whether it's the weekend or week nights," Pearcey said. "Anything really helps the agency."
Advocates-Crisis Support Services is searching for at least two more people to join its team.
"We would love to have four more, but the training is pretty intensive, there is a lot of traumatizing information that volunteers are exposed to," Pearcey said. "It takes a certain type of person to be able to take this on, so if we were able to get two dedicated volunteers that would be great."
