The season has gone by fast for Moffat County High School girls golf, and in that time their coach has seen a lot of growth from a group that’s still quite green.
MCHS girls shot a 361 during a Tuesday tournament at Rifle Creek Golf Course, an event that was somewhat tough going, said coach Ann Marie Roberts.

“Scores didn’t really show up, but I saw some good things they were improving on,” she said.
In Rifle, Tané Otis shot 114, Hali Reyes 115 and Caitlen Krause 132 to round out the team tally, with Makayla Martinez and Kaylah Hampton also shooting in the tourney.
The team was also originally scheduled to play April 10 at Carbondale’s Aspen Glen Club but instead hit the links at Fruita’s Adobe Creek, which Roberts said was a far better showing for everyone, Adobe a more accessible locale than Rifle.
“Rifle’s hard, up in the hills like that,” she said.
Otis and Jaci McDiffett each notched a 106, Reyes 121, Krause 126 and Hampton 136, while Martinez and Payton Voloshin got their first experience playing 18 holes.
Moffat County girls next play at EagleVail Golf Club on April 25, which Roberts said will be a test given the course’s similarity to Rifle Creek.
While all athletes have made strides in their drives, the puzzling predicament of extra strokes has been putting. Roberts pointed to an example of Martinez getting on a Par 3 green in one shot only to finish the hole with a 6.
“It’s weird because we work on that all the time,” Roberts said.
Following EagleVail will be May 1’s MCHS Invitational at Yampa Valley Golf Course, the final regular meet of the season before May 8’s 3A Region 4 Tournament at Battlement Mesa.
Otis led the Bulldogs at regionals last year, shooting 102 to place 22nd, though the team’s only senior is looking to drop her score quite a bit from that.
“My big goal is to break into the 90s,” she said.
