Fantasy Sports Fix: Daily fantasy baseball picks

Chris Gingrich/For the Daily Press

So, I’ve been playing the free daily version of fantasy baseball pretty much the whole baseball season now and all I can say is that there is way more than meets the eye with this game. There’s quite a few things to consider when making the best possible daily fantasy lineup and I never really imagined a daily game to have so much depth to it, but it does.

You have the pitcher versus batter matchups, the player history at certain ballparks, and you need the recent stats of the players plus a few other things as well. Not to mention you also usually have a budget of $200 you have to manage to spend wisely on 10 position players, which includes three outfielders and two starting pitchers.

It is quite fun, though, and I have managed to come in first place once in a 35-person league. I managed to score 143 points in that contest, and I had both pitchers score over 20 points as well.

With that said, let’s get down to business and uncover some great batting matchups for daily fantasy baseball this week.

David Peralta, outfield, Arizona Diamondbacks

The value slugger was at Coors Field early in the week and then goes up against a struggling San Francisco pitching staff when he takes on Jake Peavy and Matt Cain on Saturday and Sunday.

Manny Machado, third base, Baltimore Orioles

Don’t be scared of his $23 price tag and you should be rewarded with his production this week against Minnesota and Detroit. He faces Detroit in a four-game set through Sunday, and I expect some good things from the Orioles slugger this weekend as he continues to smash the ball.

Maikel Franco, third base, Philadelphia Phillies

He’s been struggling recently, but I expect at least one bounce back game for him going up against Cincinnati Friday. He’s going against left-hander Brandon Finnegan, whom he ripped for two RBIs in his only game against the southpaw.

Ryan Braun, outfield, Milwaukee Brewers

He has two home runs in his last nine at-bats and has a decent matchup against the San Diego Padres coming up this weekend. Braun will be facing Andrew Cashner Friday, a pitcher whom he hits well. He has three RBIs in six at-bats on his career against Cashner.

Sleeper Pick of the Week: Kevin Pillar, outfield, Toronto Blue Jays

Take advantage and pick him up cheap for his weekend stint against the Rangers. While he does have six RBIs this past week, he also plays very well at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, where he holds a career batting average of .750 against all the pitchers he will be facing this weekend.
