There’s a new beast in the motor pool at the Moffat County Public Safety Center — a nearly 20 ton armored vehicle.

The Mine Resistant Ambush Protect (MRAP) vehicle was acquired by Craig Police Department for $3,450 through Department of Defense programs that allow the transfer of excess property to law enforcement agencies across the nation.

According to a news release from the police department and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Tony Fandel began applying for the vehicle in April of 2014 and the department was notified in October 2015 that it would be receiving a 2008 MaxxPro MRAP manufactured by Navistar.

Police Cmndr. Bill Leonard said the vehicle will be used by the Special Response Team and replaces the department’s aging and outdated armored vehicle.

The vehicle has to be modified for police use and marked as a police vehicle but it is expected to be operational by mid-September.

“While this was a military vehicle it will be easily converted to meet our local law enforcement needs in special tactical situations,” states the news release.
