Competitors in the Yahoo Golf Tournament on Saturday were blessed with a day designed for the fairway – mild temperatures and clear blue skies set the tone at one of the most important fundraisers for Boys & Girls Club of Craig and Craig Kiwanis Club.

“Look at this, it’s gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous,” said Curt Weiss, a returning participant who claimed victory in his flight at last year’s tournament.

The tournament began around 9:30 a.m. at Yampa Valley Golf Course with 43 two-person teams competing.

Before golfers hit the green, Blaine Tucker buzzed the 18th hole with his airplane, sprinkling it with hundreds of numbered red and white golf balls.

Whichever balls landed closest to the hole won prizes totaling more than $7,500 in value from an assortment of sponsors. Prizes included Denver Broncos tickets, golf equipment and packages, gift certificates and more.

Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Dana Duran said the tournament was just as successful as years past.

“It always validates what we do,” she said. “That people are willing to spend their hard-earned money to support the Boys & Girls Club and Kiwanis Club and spend their Saturday with us.”

Duran said the event usually raises around $15,000 to be split between the two organizing entities.

The funds raised on Saturday will go a long way for Craig’s youth. According to Duran, 50 percent of kids in the area aged six to 14 take advantage of the Boys and Girls Club’s facility every year.

“It all comes together to support our community,” she said.
