Moffat County Commissioners honor Corrie Ponikvar

Noelle Leavitt Riley

The Moffat County Commissioners convened for their regular Tuesday morning meeting, but it was no ordinary gathering — they had a scheme up their sleeves.

Commission Chairman John Kinkaid opened with general discussion when his fellow commissioner, Chuck Grobe, stated that he had something to say.

“I make a motion that Moffat County makes the proclamation that March 31 will be Corrie Ponikvar Day in Moffat County,” Grobe said with joy.

The crowd at the courthouse cheered and clapped about the announcement.

Corrie and her husband, John Ponikvar, sat in the audience, stunned as Grobe gave Corrie and fellow community members a day to celebrate the good works that she’s bestowed on the community.

Grobe then looked at Kinkaid and said, “Do you second that?”

With a big smile on his face, Kinkaid replied, “Oh, yeah, I second it.”

And so it passed that March 31, 2015 will be Corrie Ponikvar Day in Moffat County.

Corrie and John were asked to attend the Tuesday commissioner meeting on false pretenses, thinking that they were there to honor Moffat County Clerk Lila Herod with an award. Yet Lila was the decoy.

The announcement was carefully planned in conjunction with a celebration that the past and present board of Moffat County United Way are holding for Ponikvar from 5 to 7 p.m. March 31 at the Museum of Northwest Colorado.

Chuck proceeded to the official proclamation:

Corrie Ponikvar has been the executive director for the Moffat County United Way since 1997… raising over $400,000 per year, and… Corrie has been instrumental in developing many programs such as:

• The Human Resource Council (Moffat and Rio Blanco counties), 2-1-1 call line that provides free and confidential information and referral for help with food, housing, employment, health care and counseling and non-profit board trainings — “Working with Volunteers,” Community Impact Program — Bridges Out of Poverty, Youth United Way, Connections 4 Kids Program; and Festival of Trees.

• WHEREAS, Corrie’s leadership, as the board chairman for the Connection 4 Kids, organizes the annual Cherish the Little Things Art Show where the top 20 pieces are auctioned off to help raise funds for this organization; and

• WHEREAS, Corrie has been instrumental in bringing the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Moffat and Rio Blanco County libraries, which allows children up to age 5 to enroll in this free program and receive books mailed to their home every month; and
