Fitness Tip: Planning exercise progression

If you are starting an aerobic exercise regimen such as walking or jogging, it is very important to plan your exercise progression. The three components of exercise progression are intensity, frequency and duration. Intensity is how hard you exert yourself. Frequency is the number of days per week you exercise. Duration is the length of time you exercise. To prevent overexertion and soreness, only increase one of these components at a time. After making a change, maintain that level for at least one week before you progress your exercise regimen further.
