Hickenlooper talks about Colowyo

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

In an interview Colorado Public Radio’s Ryan Warner, Gov. John Hickenlooper addressed Colowyo Coal Mine’s importance to Craig and Moffat County.

“It’s 240 jobs in a part of the state where those jobs are critical,” he said. “It would be the same as if someone was coming into metro-Denver and saying that were going to suddenly lose 15,000 jobs.”

Hickenlooper also said that shutting down a coal mine is not how you achieved lower carbon emissions.

“This is simple business accounting,” Hickenlooper told Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner. “There is a huge surplus of coal out there. There’s a million different places to get it.”

Instead, he suggested lowering demand through renewable energy mandates and more use of natural gas, steps Colorado is already taking.
