Greg Hamilton: We should spend wisely
To the editor
On Thursday June 25, the Moffat County School District Board of Education, by a vote of 5-1, approved the 2015-16 budget. This budget was approved after board member Tony Peroulis made the motion to reinstate the iPad initiative and accompanying technology specialist. These additional expenditures, approved 5-1, were added to an already deficit budget of 1.2 million.
Without debating the necessity for the iPad initiative, the greater concern has to be how to finance this growing deficit they keep creating. There was no motion or plan to offset this increase with any kind of decrease to the existing expenditures. There was not a plan to reduce the number of elementary principals, reduce travel expenses, or to try and reduce the swelling medical costs. There actually was not even the slightest suggestion on how to reduce the budget, but rather they kept increasing it. No plan what-so-ever.
This type of fiscal irresponsibility is atrocious and is what is being adopted by the federal government. Increased expenditures paid for by raising taxes.
When are we going to say enough is enough?
