Craig The Moffat County Republican Party and Moffat County Democratic Party each held separate re-organization meetings this week. Both parties elected members to be chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer.
According to the Colorado Revised Statutes elections section, county political party committees must meet between Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 of odd-numbered years to re-elect officers.
On Friday at the American Legion Hall in Craig, the Moffat County Democratic Party held their required meeting. Jo Ann Baxter remains chair, Sandy Sorensen remains co-chair, Jan Rogers became the secretary and Brian Baxter remained treasurer.
Walker Criswell, a member of the Moffat County Democrats, said the Baxters do such a great job with their positions and he feels not many other people could compete.
“You guys do more than your share,” Criswell said.
But Jo Ann said she would be willing to allow another member the chair position. When none of the other six members present stepped forward and all six unanimously voted her in, Jo Ann agreed to keep the position.
The Moffat County Republican Party held their meeting on Thursday night at The Memorial Hospital. All of the party’s officers were retained in their positions; Brandi Meek will continue as chair with Pam Foster as co-chair, Robin Schiffbauer as secretary and Sherman Romney as treasurer.
Last week, Meek made a campaign announcement via email. She will run for secretary of the Colorado Republican Party. Meek’s only opponent is the incumbent, Lana Fore.
Meek’s two sons and a desire to see change in the secretary position in the state party motivate her to run.
“It took a lot of thought; this is a big move, and it’s the first time I’ve been the candidate,” Meek said. “I’ve helped run several campaigns but I have never been candidate myself.”
Meek has experience campaigning and working with the Colorado Republican Party in the past. For the past two years, she served as a small county representative on the Colorado Republican Party’s executive committee. She has also been a voting member of the state central committee for six years.
Meek is also currently a class member of the Leadership Program of the Rockies. On March 14, the Colorado State Republican Part will choose its new secretary.
