Craig is a phenomenal community. It gives and gives and gives.

That’s exactly what happened in the past two weeks with Craig’s fireworks fund. After the community got word that the city couldn’t afford to pay its share of the fireworks and that Moffat County couldn’t pay for the whole show, businesses and community members opened their wallets and checkbooks.

The annual Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza costs about $8,000 each year. In less than 14 days, our community raised $9,200 to ensure that we have the annual display. That’s what’s amazing about Craig — people always help.

If you look at the giving spirits of community members throughout the past several months, it’s clear that if you’re ever down on luck, Craig will be there to help.

Take the Oxley family for example. Their home burned down in November. In December, the home of Tracey and Steve Lathrop was engulfed in flames.

Craig residents with giving and caring hearts pulled together and held two very successful fundraisers to help the families get back on their feet. It’s what we do. We rally together in times of need.

The fireworks fund is another wonderful example of producing great results out of a not so great situation.

We’d like to use this space to commend the businesses that have so generously donated money for Craig’s Forth of July celebration.

Yampa Valley Bank committed to the largest chunk of money so far, donating $4,000 toward the effort. Clarion Inn & Suites came in second with a $2,000 donation.

McDonald’s is providing $1,000, as is The Memorial Hospital. TMH Auxiliary pledged $500, as did T&H Napa Auto Parts. Downtown Books and the Maybell Women’s Club both are contributing $100.

We’d also like to recognize those who made smaller donations. It’s a tremendous thing to be so generous.

It’s not always easy to give so effortlessly, especially with the tough economic times we’ve all faced in the past few years. Regardless, the show must go on, and that’s exactly what’s happened for this year’s Fourth of July celebration.

We should all be proud to live in Craig.
