Craig At its regular monthly meeting Thursday night, the Moffat County School District Board of Education:
• Heard reports from representatives of Moffat County High School Student Council about upcoming activities regarding awareness of school shootings and suicide, elections for the 2014-15 school year and the goals of achieving a distinction as a Council of Excellence.
• Heard a report from activities and athletics director Rick Schmitz about district sports teams’ current schedules, including the MCHS girls soccer and baseball teams and Craig Middle School wrestling; the postseason achievements of MCHS boys and girls basketball; and members of MCHS speech and debate team who attended the state tournament earlier in the month.
• Heard a report from Krista Schenck and the student members of the Distributive Education Clubs of America and Future Business Leaders of America teams about attending state events. DECA went to state in February, and FBLA will do so in mid-April. The report included a slideshow about what the activities involve for participants, including an early look at the career world.
School Board President JB Chapman was vocal about how DECA and FBLA are an asset for students and a reason for pride in the district.
“As a business owner in our community, my eye is attracted to the organizations that promote public speaking and leadership so you students can communicate ideas and set your minds to solving problems in finance,” he said. “I’m very proud of these programs, so thank you for being involved and putting your best foot forward.”
• Heard from parent Amber Weldon about recently transferring her son to East Elementary School. Weldon said she chose to change schools after an incident with a teacher at Ridgeview Elementary School, at which point, Chapman asked that she not go into further details in a public setting and that any such issues between a student and district personnel remain private in order to best protect the children.
• Moved into executive session to discuss a superintendent recommendation for the nonrenewal of teacher contracts for the 2014-15 school year.
• Approved, 6-0, minutes from meetings in February and March, a general ledger report and revenue and expenditure report for February and a check register and personnel report for March.
• Heard presentations from board members about the status of schools within the district. Among the noteworthy items discussed were fifth-grade students from each Craig elementary school attending Liberty Day events in Denver, Craig Middle School’s Model United Nations recently attending an event in Steamboat Springs, improved scores on MAPS tests at MCHS, bully prevention in schools, the Totes of Hope program at Sandrock Elementary School, achievement in the Destination Imagination program, and more.
• Approved, 6-0, a proposal from Finance Director Tinneal Gerber to retain the audit services of McMahan and Associates LLC, of Avon, for district finances.
• Approved, 6-0, first readings of policies regarding staff maternity, paternity and parental leave, as well as catastrophic illness or injury leave.
• Announced plans for a 7 a.m. April 17 meeting to discuss budget concerns, among other topics. Chapman also announced that future monthly meetings will be moved to schools within the district, with the April 24 meeting taking place at 6:30 p.m. in the CMS library. Tours of the schools also will be involved in this change.
• Moved to executive session to discuss the superintendent contract and the position’s evaluation and goals.
