The Moffat County girls golf team went low in its second straight tournament, picking up a third-place finish Tuesday in Montrose.

The Bulldogs were playing at Black Canyon Golf Course and put together a team score of 299 to take third. Caitlin Harjes led the way, shooting an 88, which was good enough for fourth place individually.

“For me, it was my second best score I’ve ever done,” Harjes said. “I was very proud of it.”

Katelyn Peroulis’ 103 and freshman Josie King’s 108 rounded out the Bulldogs team score, their second consecutive third-place finish after the team was third out of 15 in Palisade last week.

Peroulis said her shots were inconsistent all round, but she was able to salvage some holes playing at Black Canyon, which reminded her of Yampa Valley Golf Course in some ways.

“It’s kind of like our course, it’s not too hard,” she said. “If you hit it right, let’s say, you’re not in trouble (at Black Canyon). On some courses, you might be out of bounds or really get into trouble.”

The Bulldogs had five other players participate in a tournament at the par-3 course in the area.

Lexi Gonzalez shot a 94 to take second place, while Tané Otis’s 97 was good for fourth. Brooke Krause (102), Hannah Beckett (107) and Makayla Thompson (116) rounded out the team’s scores for the day.

Gonzalez said it was some of the best golf she’s ever played, and liked the par-3 course, which allowed her to use her favorite clubs, the irons, more often.

“It felt amazing,” she said of finishing second. “I did a whole lot better from last year to this year, and I used only my irons the whole day.”

Otis, playing in just her second tournament at Moffat County, enjoyed her round beyond simply shooting well.

“I played pretty good and was happy with my score,” Otis said. “The girls that I was playing with made it a lot of fun. I like people that like to talk, and so we had fun and got to know each other.”
