Neil Folks announced his resignation from the Moffat County Council on Aging at the Board of County Commissioners meeting Tuesday.
Folks has been a member of the council for about 10 years, so the decision was difficult, he said.
“It is now time for me to move to another level of community work and cross generational lines,” Folks said.
Folks’ goal on the council had always been to bring a senior or community center to Craig. The council’s bylaws prevent Folks from using his position with them to further a goal that isn’t directly connected to senior issues, so he decided it was time to work through different avenues. Folks doesn’t want to just bring a senior center to town, but a community center that could appeal to people of all ages, he said.
Craig City Council member Ray Beck has worked with Folks on this project before and said he was sorry to see him resign.
Folks has “been very passionate about that organization. He’s always coming forward and making sure there were folks on the board who wanted to serve. Even more recently, in the last six months, they got involved in the community center,” Beck said. “He’s been a champion for the Council on Aging, sitting on that board. He will be missed, I’m sure.”
But Folks plans to be just as involved in the community as before. He only gave up his position with the Council on Aging because he wanted to put all his effort into getting a community center to Craig, and he knew he’d need help from non-seniors.
“The community of Moffat County (and) Craig needs to bring together the multifaceted populations and the multigenerations into a multipurpose concept that would be beneficial to all concerned as community, where all can gather to learn, to play, to work and to be healthy together, bridging any perceived gaps that may exist, that which will improve the quality of life in the great community we live,” Folks said in his resignation letter.
Folks now is working to create a board of community members who want to accomplish this objective.
