Craig's Boys & Girls Club enriches the community

Craig’s Boys & Girls Club picks up where schools leave off. Over the course of the year, half of Craig’s kids — ages 5 to 14 — will stop by the club.

They’ll do so for games, art, homework, mentoring or just for a safe place to be. It’s open after school and all-day in the summer.

“It’s so much more than just a place to babysit and drop off your kid,” said Kari Neuman, program director for the organization that was voted Best Club of Moffat County. “Each program has an objective behind it.”

Dana Duran, executive director of the Northwest Colorado Boys & Girls Club, said they work to help make Moffat County’s children better citizens.

“We provide programs that build on choice and build on mentorship that’s give kids a view outside their current circumstances,” she said.

By enriching Craig’s youth, they can help enrich the whole community, she said. They also seek to expand horizons.

“I want kids to know there’s a whole world outside of Highway 40,” Duran said.

Neuman agreed and expressed enthusiasm about boosting Craig’s children’s awareness.

“We have the opportunity to expose these kids in this community to so much more.”

About 900 children used the program in 2013 — and the club works with all of their interests. It hosts gym games, new art projects every day, a game room and a teen room with computers and mentoring help.

Now the club just wants to build on what they have by expanding the teen programs, Duran said.

Ultimately they want to just be a part of the community’s overall vitality, Neuman said.

“We set these kids up for success,” she said.
