When it opened in Craig with hours from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Cool Water Grille knew it would be focusing on taking care of locals’ morning needs.

In its four years now, CWG has become a popular spot for coffee and the breakfast basics in the morning, making it a winner of Best Breakfast Restaurant in Moffat County.

“Our coffee drinkers in the morning time make a big difference for us,” said Erin Durham of CWG. “We have about 35 who are here every morning, so it’s great to have those loyal customers.”

But Cool Water Grille has also become popular for a different sort of morning drink, its Bloody Mary, which has been helping residents during the weekend recovery time and is now a winner in the first year for the Best Bloody Mary category.

“That’s just something my dad made when we opened,” Durham said. “It’s just stuck. It’s become one of the things we’re better known for in the area.”

While it’s the flavor customers keep coming back for, Cool Water’s Bloody Mary looks as good as it tastes, with a host of fruits and vegetables (and a strip of bacon) poking out the top when it arrives at a table.

“In Craig, a Saturday morning Bloody Mary is a must,” said owner Becky Otis. “People have their cabins or whatever and they like to have them on Saturday and Sunday mornings. They like to come here and have them too.”

Knowing the value a weekend Bloody Mary can have for people, the drinks are on special Saturday mornings for $3 at Cool Water Grille, which was thankful for both its morning food and drink awards.

“When we opened I thought we’d be more of a breakfast place than anything, but with how much people like (the Bloody Marys), they’ve taken off too,” Otis said.
