In a proclamation made today, Gov. John Hickenlooper temporarily renamed Colorado’s 14ers — peaks surpassing 14,000 feet in elevation — after active players on the Denver Broncos roster. The names will be effective for one day: Super Bowl Sunday, when the AFC Championship team will battle the Seattle Seahawks for glory in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Sunday also will be known as Denver Broncos-Mania Day in Colorado.

With the number of 14ers and players on the active roster the same — 53 — each player will be honored by a different mountain.

Quarterback Peyton Manning, who stands tall as a team leader, exemplifies highest summit Mt. Elbert. Kicker Matt Prater, who set an NFL record this season with a 64-yard field goal, is honored with Longs Peak because of his ability to kick long.

Wide receiver Wes Welker will be Mt. Sherman, as he is expected to fare well against coverage from Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.
