Linda Peters, chief deputy of the Moffat County Treasurer and Public Trustee office, announced her bid Monday to run for county treasurer.
The current treasurer and public trustee, Elaine Sullivan, is nearing the end of her first term, and instead of running again, she plans to retire.
“I’ve been with the county for 33 years,” she said. “I decided to retire, and we have a ranch.”
Sullivan said she wants to get back on the ranch and help her husband run the operation.
Peters said she will miss Sullivan but is enthusiastic about the opportunity to run for treasurer.
“I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Moffat County treasurer/public trustee. I have 26 years of experience in the office with the past 11 years as chief deputy,” Peters said in a statement. “My years of experience qualify me as a good candidate for this position. I would love to have the opportunity to serve the taxpayers of Moffat County.”
Peters admits she is new to campaigning, but she is not new to the job.
“I honestly think I’d be the best person for the job because I’ve been here for 26 years,” she said. “I definitely work well with the public.”
She’s been doing bookkeeping and accounting for nearly 25 years.
“I’m definitely confident that I can do the job,” she said. “That’s for sure.”
Peters has the support of Sullivan, who said she is sad to leave her position but hopes she will be able pass the post on to Peters.
“I’ve had the support of Moffat County for years,” she said. “I want to turn (treasurer) over to somebody I trust, and she’ll be great.”
The two said they learned a lot from each other, and that’s why Sullivan encouraged Peters to run.
Sullivan has “been the best thing for me actually,” Peters said. “She helped me build my confidence, and I helped her.”
Sullivan is confident Peters will be the right person for the job.
“She does an excellent job,” Sullivan said. “She’s very knowledgeable (and) very community-oriented.”
Currently, no one else has announced candidacy for the office of the treasurer.
