On the record for Moffat County jail Jan. 14

Crime of the month

From the “You can’t make this stuff up” file:

An elderly person lost $400 to a “sweepstakes scam.” The victim of the scam was asked to send money to Jamaica to pay for taxes and was told winnings would be delivered. The alleged scammer, identified as a “representative,” called the victim’s home while an officer was present. The representative said they were in Craig, and the officer asked how the weather had been. The representative said it had been quite rainy all night — in mid-December. That’s when the officer said he was with law enforcement, and that in fact, it had snowed two inches, not rained. The caller then hung-up.

— As reported by Sgt. John Forgay in the Craig Police Department’s December 2013 month-end report.
