Wins would make Moffat County basketball regional hosts

— With wins Tuesday night, both Moffat County basketball teams guaranteed themselves spots in the upcoming 3A regional basketball tournaments. Now, they will play to host regional games next weekend.

Five teams from the 3A Western Slope League will qualify for the 32-team regional field, and the boys and girls teams each are guaranteed fourth place at worst in the district. Under the Colorado High School Activities Association 3A playoff format, eight teams will host the round of 32 and 16 games when the regional tournament begins March 7. Those eight teams will be the six district tournament winners and the next two highest seeded teams by the tournament committee.

Moffat County girls

3 p.m. Friday vs. Grand Valley

12:30 or 4 p.m. Saturday vs. Olathe or Gunnison

Moffat County boys

8:15 p.m. Friday vs. Grand Valley

2:15 or 5:45 p.m. Saturday vs. Aspen or Coal Ridge

All games are at Palisade High School.

With six losses for the girls and four for the boys team, neither Moffat County team is likely to be one of the final two hosts, but winning two more games at districts would give them games in Craig with a chance to make the Great 8 of the state tournament.

The quest for a district title begins Friday in Palisade, against Grand Valley for both teams. The girls will play the top-seeded Cardinals at 3 p.m. and try to repeat their performance from Saturday.

Grand Valley’s girls won 10 straight games in the WSL this season, including a 58-40 victory against Moffat County on Jan. 25. But the Bulldogs dominated the first half on their way to a 51-43 win in Craig.

If the girls team can get through the Cardinals, it will take on the winner of Olathe and Gunnison on Saturday. It beat Gunnison twice this season and split games with Olathe, winning the more recent contest in Craig.

The boys also face Grand Valley in their district semifinal at 8:15 p.m. Friday. After a nine-point win in Parachute in January, the Bulldogs lost to the Cardinals in their final game of the regular season. Grand Valley played without leading scorer Sam Parker to win, 57-53, in Craig.

With a win, Moffat would play the winner of Aspen and Coal Ridge in the other semifinal. The Skiers beat the Titans in both of their regular-season matchups.
