On the record for Moffat County Jail, Feb. 11

Crime of the month

From the “You can’t make this stuff up” file:

A new scam is victimizing locals by phone. Overseas perpetrators call phone numbers, wait for just one ring and then hang up, in hopes that the victim will call back. Just calling back enables the offender to hack into phone bills and charge about $20 for the call and another $9 per minute. Aaron Reese, spokesman for the Better Business Bureau, said it’s more successful as a scam because it doesn’t play with the same tricks that other scammers use.

“There is no one trying to sell you anything. There is no one sending the wrong type of message or who has a foreign accent or doesn’t speak very well,” he said in a statement. “All of those things that we look for are absent.”

The phone calls tend to come from the Caribbean and British Virgin Islands. People who think they may have been a victim of this scam should call their cell carrier immediately. Everyone else should be skeptical about incoming numbers they don’t recognize and definitely not call back missed calls.

As reported by Sgt. John Forgay in the Craig Police Department’s Jan. 2014 month-end report.
