Craig Sports Briefs for Feb. 5, 2014: Craig Midget Hockey falls 3 times to Gunnison

The Bulldogs closed out their league season with three losses in Gunnison last weekend.

The midget team was able to get on the scoreboard in two of the three games but couldn’t shut down Gunnison’s high-powered attack, losing, 10-2, 9-3 and 9-0, on Saturday and Sunday.

In Saturday’s first game, Logan Roberts and Brodey Gutierrez scored for Craig, on assists from Cade Bang and Tyler Gerber, respectively. Wyatt Bellio made 18 saves in the game. In the nightcap Saturday, Brenden Spencer scored with an assist from Ripley Bellio while Gerber and Sarah White each scored unassisted. Austin Magnuson made 30 saves on 39 shots in the game.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs were shut out, with Wyatt Bellio making 17 more saves.

Those were the final scheduled games of Craig’s Colorado Amateur Hockey Association season, the team finishing 0-19-1. The Bulldogs have plans to play Glenwood Springs sometime later this month.

MCHS to honor former wrestling coach Gutierrez on senior night

At the final wrestling meet of the regular season, longtime Moffat County wrestling coach Roman Gutierrez will be honored for his contributions to the program.

The Bulldogs host Coal Ridge and Battle Mountain in Craig on Friday for senior night and will celebrate the careers of each graduating member of the team. But they also will show their appreciation for Gutierrez's 30-plus years as the team's anchor.

During Gutierrez's time as head coach at Moffat County, the Bulldogs won five state championships as a team in three decades. He coached 12 individual state champions and was named the Colorado Wrestling Hall of Fame's Coach of the Year in 2002.

The triangular weigh-ins are set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday.
