At its monthly meeting Thursday evening, The Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees:
• Approved, 6-0, a motion to accept medical staff privileges as presented by TMH Chief of Staff Dr. Jeff Womble for hospitalists, internists and pediatricians. The full list of new hospital staff to receive these privileges was unavailable at the time of meeting, and another vote to end at noon Monday was scheduled via e-meeting to formally approve all staff. Special approval was given, effective immediately, to Dr. Alexis Driggs, new general surgeon at TMH, and Dr. Clay M. Pendleton, new urologist.
• Introduced new Interim Chief Nursing Officer Chris Kalinowski and new Materials Manager Girard Geis.
• Approved, 6-0, the purchase of an elbow screw kit for a discounted cost at nearly half of amount budgeted for the purchase. The purchase of a second shoulder screw set was approved using some of the remaining funds, leaving $7,600 left over.
• Approved, 6-0, a new five-year elevator service agreement at an annual fee of nearly $2,000 less than the prior contract.
• Reviewed the June financial report, which reflected a net income for June of $245,000 and a year-to-date loss of $41,000 compared with a prior year-to-date loss of $1.6 million. Gross revenue for the year was $2.8 million more than the prior year.
• Quorum Health Resources representative Wayne Scholz reported that two candidates will be interviewed this week for the chief financial officer vacancy. TMH CEO John Rossfeld and the board will be responsible for selecting a finalist for the position.
• Rossfeld reported that TMH is seeking to become a contract organization with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in order to become a care provider to area veterans. New legislation signed into law this month stipulates that vets who live more than 40 miles from or face long wait times at a VA facility can seek care outside the VA system. It remains unclear whether the Major William Adams Veterans TeleHealth Clinic in Craig qualifies as a full primary care facility under the new legislation. However, TMH is a definite candidate to provide specialty services.
• Discussed a community update event to be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at TMH. Rossfeld and TMH Chief of Marketing and Business Development Jennifer Riley addressed Craig City Council this month and received positive feedback about TMH’s progress in recent months, including efforts to continue working toward improved community relations and to encourage cooperation between TMH and groups such as the Moffat County commissioners, the Craig Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Northwestern Community College and Moffat County School District in order to promote community and economic development in the region.
• Announced that Dr. Elise Sullivan signed her contract. Dr. Sullivan will become TMH’s second family practitioner. She is bilingual in Spanish and specializes in obstetrics.
• Announced the hire of a new athletic trainer with experience dealing with concussions and a wide range of experience working with kids of all ages and all sports, including football, swimming and volleyball. He is to begin at TMH on Sept. 3.
• Discussed a possible future collaboration with Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. to help service the health needs of their 1,800 employees through the TMH Medical Clinic.
• Discussed the possibility of TMH Medical Clinic extending its hours to include a Saturday morning clinic once Dr. Sullivan begins work at TMH.
• In closing, board Chairman Don Cook commented that it is “very gratifying to hear that we’re really moving forward. We’re taking a big step. We’ve taken a big step with John as CEO. We’re a cheery group tonight, and I think it’s really good and I’d like to commend everyone on staff.”

After the executive session, the board reported that it:
• Approved a contract amendment with Quorum Health Resources. The amendment sets the management fee at the 2013 fee structure for the remainder of the term of the contract.
• Approved a three-year contract with Studer Group. Studer Group engages with hospitals to implement best practices that will help improve employee engagement, physician alignment, patient satisfaction, quality and clinical outcomes.
