With the start of a new school year upon us, things are about to get busy. Keep it simple at snack time with this tried and true healthy snack option: apples and almond butter.
Almond butter makes a great alternative to peanut butter with its higher content of vitamin E, magnesium and iron. Both nut butters offer a good dose of protein, healthy fats and dietary fiber.
If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool peanut butter-lover, not to worry. Peanut butter is also a healthy option, so long as you avoid the brands that add sugar, hydrogenated oils, preservatives and other additives.
Remember that apples are No. 1 on the “Dirty Dozen” list of conventional produce items with the highest pesticide content, so buy organic when possible. You can buy almond butter by the jar, or look for it in these undeniably convenient little packets which will make packing your child’s lunch a breeze.
