Playoffs not out of the question for Moffat County baseball

With one weekend of baseball left, it appears the Moffat County Bulldogs have an outside opportunity at sneaking into a district playoff bracket.

MCHS is just 5-12 this season and has lost eight straight games after starting the season well. The struggles have come during some key league games and crippled the Bulldogs’ chances at a playoff spot in the upcoming 3A state tournament. But two wins this weekend and some help from other teams could get them a bottom seed in the tournament.

All classifications’ baseball tournament formats rely on automatic qualifiers from each league and wildcard points to help determine the seeding into eight, four-team district tournaments, the winners of which meet at the state tournament site. But 3A has a provision that can allow non-automatic qualifiers a spot into the tournament.

The automatic qualifying teams from each league only make up 30 of the 32 spots in the 3A tournament, with the final spots available to two 3A teams without a league. If either Fort Lupton or Ridgeview Academy wins 10 games during the regular season, they get an automatic qualifying spot. If those teams don’t win 10 games, the final two tournament spots will go to the remaining teams with the highest wildcard points.

Neither of those schools will reach 10 wins this season, opening up the final two slots to the wildcard numbers.

Moffat County is seventh in the 3A WSL and cannot reach the automatic qualifier spot in fifth place. But at 35th in wildcard points, they have an outside shot of reaching the final spot.

The Bulldogs’ current wildcard number is 71.412, a point behind current 32nd-place team Colorado Academy (72.429).

Moffat County closes its season with two home games against Roaring Fork Saturday. With two wins, they would certainly pass the Rams, who currently sit 34th in the wildcard standings. More losses from the couple of teams in front of them, and the Bulldogs could make up enough points to sneak in as the final team in the tournament.
