Moffat County soccer beats Rangely on the road

The Moffat County girls soccer team got back into the win column Tuesday when they got their offense going.

Coming off consecutive hard-fought ones to Aspen and Roaring Fork, the Bulldogs responded with a 7-1 win over the Panthers on the road, improving to 6-7 this season. Delaney Baker played all over the field for Moffat County but led the way after being slotted into the midfield, scoring four goals.

“Delaney, she just took over pretty much,” coach Harry Tripp said. “She started out as the forward, then she moved back to defense, then I tried her out in the midfield. She picked us up.”

Moffat beat Rangely 8-0 earlier in the season in Craig, but the Panthers came out strong Tuesday, scoring the game’s opening goal. That surprised the Bulldogs, who came out slower than normal, Tripp said. But they responded before long, taking a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Jazmine Swindler scored two goals and Brenna Ciesco had the other for Moffat County, which tacked on three goals in the second half and looked even better with its ball movement.

“We ended up with over 40 shots on goal,” Tripp said. “The second half they looked really good. They were passing well, drop passing, drop shots, crosses. It was good soccer.”

The win over Rangely came after a 3-1 loss at Roaring Fork Monday which eliminated the Bulldogs from playoff contention. Four teams from 3A’s Region 3 qualify for the postseason and Moffat’s tight losses to Aspen and Roaring Fork came at the wrong time.

They’ll close the season at Vail Christian and Grand Junction Central and have a chance to finish with a winning record for the second straight year, and just the second time in program history.

“We still can finish the season out above .500,” Tripp said. “We can get to 8-7, so that’s what we’re going for.”
