The Moffat County girls basketball team will be looking for a new leader next season.

Girls basketball coach Matt Ray sent an e-mail to players and parents Thursday morning announcing his resignation from coaching the team. In four years at the helm of the Bulldogs, Ray amassed a 71-27 record.

“I would like to thank you for the opportunity that I have had in coaching girls basketball here at Moffat County,” the e-mail said. “I have decided to resign from coaching girls basketball and spend more time with my family. I have enjoyed coaching in this program and I only wish the best for its future.”

Ray took over for Craig Mortensen, the winningest coach in Moffat County history, and the girls basketball program continued to thrive. The Bulldogs made the postseason tournament each of the past four years, advancing to the Sweet 16 in each season. After moving to 3A, Moffat County won each of the last two Western Slope District championships.

“We were league champs three of the four years, won the district twice, after moving to the 3A format,” Ray said. “We had great success.”

Despite losing 11 seniors over the past two seasons, the Bulldogs’ outlook for the future remains bright. They will return two starters and several more key players who gave them big minutes off the bench in 2013-14.
