Moffat County defense shuts down CRMS

After making some adjustments, the Moffat County girls soccer team played stingy defense and picked up its second straight win.

The Bulldogs were taking on Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale after hosting the Oysters in Craig Thursday. Coming off a shaky performance on Thursday, Moffat County was much steadier, especially in keeping the Oysters’ offense down in a 3-1 win.

CRMS, looking for its first win of the season, started quickly Saturday by getting a goal in the first five minutes. MCHS coach Harry Tripp said it came too easily, with the Oysters dribbling by defenders to get a good look and take the lead.

But after that, the Bulldogs’ back line was solid and didn’t give up many opportunities. Allie Ehlers started her first game in goal for Moffat this season and, after the early score, kept a clean sheet.

Without their leading goal scorer in the midfield, Moffat County’s offense was still potent. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead before halftime on two connections between Brenna Ciesco and Delaney Baker. Ciesco scored on a pass from Baker and returned the favor later to put the Bulldogs in front going into the break.

“We stuck Allie in goal and had Delaney and Brenna in the midfield today, and they all played pretty good,” Tripp said. “There were better passes and better drops all game.”

Jazmine Swindler added a goal in the second half to give the Bulldogs more of a cushion, but the defensive players locked down every CRMS attempt to get forward anyway.

“The defense was huge today,” Tripp said. “Alex (Samuelson) was all over, Chandra (Warren), if it ever got past the girls, they were there to kick it back out. Morgan (Lawton) played huge in the middle for us today, too.”

The Bulldogs improved to 4-5 on the season and have several key games coming up to solidify their position in the postseason. After three losses to the top teams in Region 3, Coal Ridge and Grand Valley, Moffat will play Aspen, Roaring Fork and Vail Mountain, all playoff contenders, before the season ends.

“Hopefully we just keep gaining off of this,” Tripp said. “We played better (than Thursday) and now we can keep playing better.”
